This music production workshop will be taught by the music producer Bantum. Participants will explore Ableton software and its possibilities. Bantum will talk through fundamental skills and techniques he uses with Ableton live.

Duration: 6 hours

11:00 – 14:00 Session 1

Learn the fundamentals of composing and producing using Ableton live while creating a series of musical sketches 

  • Software and hardware setup
  • Navigating the Ableton live interface
  • Drum programming and the basics of rhythm
  • Recording MIDI
  • Creating MIDI instruments and devices  
  • Manipulating sounds in sampler/simpler
  • Music theory basics (basic keyboard chord structure for synths)
  • Synthesising bass with the analogue synth
  • Recording Audio
  • Recording instruments to Ableton (guitar/synth)
  • Time stretching and warping loops
  • Audio effects – Sends/Returns

15:00 – 17:00 Session 2

Looking at your arrangement in terms of a final mix, recap from last session, stretching your loops and ideas into arrangements, while working in arrangement view.

  • creating  a song idea from scratch using MIDI drums, synths and audio loops while looking at the following;
  • Compressors & Sidechaining
  • VSTS
  • EQ & Spectrum Analysis
  • Add mastering effects to your master channel. Mixing techniques: faders and pan pots, gain staging, being aware of the mix while composing.
  • Finally, rendering your track 

Part 3, 17:00 – 18:00 Joint Ableton Resolume live performance workshop 

Bio – Ruairi Lynch aka Bantum is a Cork native electronic music producer who mixes elements of electronica, funk, dance and hip hop. He has been releasing music for close to 10 years culminating in the 2016 RTE Choice prize nominated album ‘Move’. He has performed in Ireland, the USA and the UK, held slots at festivals including Electric Picnic, Body & Soul, Sounds from a Safe Harbour, It Takes A Village and supported the likes of Chet Faker and Jon Hopkins. He has released a number of music & video projects this year with Loah, God Knows, Ben Bix and Farah Elle. Ruairi has also worked on the upcoming short film ‘VOID’ directed by Ger Duffy and produced by Motherland Films. He is currently working on another short documentary with Motherland films alongside many more music projects for 2020.
